Didactic or pedagogical in nature, Academic Illustration's primary function is to teach. (Medical-Legal illustration also "teaches," but a courtroom's primary function is to seek justice, not to teach per se). The primary conduit for academic illustration is the textbook, but educational posters, patient health care materials, journals, magazines, web sites, television and video graphics, instructional multimedia and other media may be involved in the delivery of academic medical illustration.
